William J. "Billy" Butcher is the deuteragonist of the comic series The Boys and the overarching protagonist of its sequel/spin-off The Boys: Dear Becky. Butcher was the leader of the titular Boys and a veteran of the Royal Marines. Butcher harboured a great amount of hatred for superheroes, often referred to as 'supes', and had made it his mission to kill Homelander and Black Noir to avenge his wife, Becky Saunders.
Butcher grew up in an abusive household, which he tried to escape by joining the Royal Marines just in time for the Falklands Conflict. He was eventually dishonourably discharged from the Marines for getting into a bar fight and returned home. Shortly after, he met Becky and got into a relationship with her, which would eventually result in them marrying.
Life would take a turn for the worse for Butcher when he and Becky met visited Miami and met the superteam The Seven. That night, Becky was raped by Black Noir as part of his plan to drive Homelander insane and fulfil his duty of killing him. Months later, the superpowered fetus that was growing inside Becky killed her by cutting its way out of her womb with its heat vision before being killed in turn by Butcher. After being interrogated by the police, Butcher was approached by CIA agent Greg Mallory, who gave Buther Becky’s diary, detailing her rape at the hands of Black Noir, though she mistook him for Homelander, leading Butcher to start his crusade against supes and to found The Boys. At some point, the Boys obtained and injected themselves with Compound V, granting them superpowers.
Butcher's crusade would culminate in Homelander's attempted coup on the United States government, during which both Homelander and Black Noir were killed. With his purpose fulfilled, Butcher killed most of The Boys, only to be killed himself by Wee Hughie.
