“ | You are the first to ever actually GET WHAT I WAS GOING FOR! That when an institution or establishment communicates that you must accept defeat, you raise two middle fingers to the fucking sky and say, "I WILL NEVER DIE!"

A group of high schoolers at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy in Elmville, Solace, the Bad Kids formed when each, for their own individual reasons, was sent to detention on the first day of their freshmen high school year. While in detention, the Bad Kids got into a fight with a possessed lunch lady, who managed to kill students Kristen Applebees and Gorgug Thistlespring. To bring them back to life, the school's principal Arthur Aguefort murders the guidance counselor and then commits suicide, bringing the students back to life. Seeking to uncover what exactly happened, the Bad Kids investigate what possessed the lunch lady, uncovering a conspiracy orchestrated by the human supremacist cult of the Harvestmen and the school's bloodrush coach, Coach Daybreak. They kill Daybreak, initially believing the mystery was solved, until they learn that Daybreak himself was working for the Vice Principal Goldenhoard, a cursed red dragon trapped by Aguefort in the body of a dragonborn. Goldenhoard eventually assumes his original form of Kalvaxus when Aguefort Adventuring Academy anoints his minions as the prom king and queen, thus breaking the curse, though the Bad Kids manage to defeat Kalvaxus with aid from their new werewolf guidance counselor Jawbone and a resurrected Arthur Aguefort.
During the Bad Kids' sophomore year, they learn that during the chaos of Kalvaxus' return, a spy known as Kalina stole the Nightmare King's Crown, an artifact in Aguefort's office that sealed the Nightmare King away. After brief stops in Bastion City to free a kidnapped Fig and Riz, the pirate city leviathan to research the Nightmare King, and the elven kingdom of Fallinel to liberate Adaine from her parents, the Bad Kids track Kalina to the Nightmare King's lair, the Forest of the Nightmare King. They fight their way through the forest, its illusions, and some mind-controlled allies before eventually defeating Kalina. Rather than kill the Nightmare King, Kristen decides to restore them to their original form, an unnamed goddess of mystery, doubt, and the night, taking on the name Cassandra. During their celebration, however, the Bad Kids unknowingly awaken the Night Yorb, an eldritch entity that brings eternal night. They're forced to use their summer break defeating the Night Yorb, successful but exhausted. The Bad Kids' junior year proves just as stressful as they learn that the barbarian teacher, Porter Cliffbreaker, is secretly collaborating with a rival party of students called the Rat Grinders to bring back Cassandra's ex-wife, the goddess of rage and conquest Ankarna, to kill her and have Porter replace her. At the end of the year during the student council election, the Bad Kids fight the Rat Grinders and Porter, eventually defeating them and resurrecting Ankarna in her original domain of summer and truth.
