You know, I never pictured myself as a hero. Never thought I'd be the one they toast for saving so many lives. And now that I'm here...I hate it. This is awful.
— Astarion

Astarion Ancunín is an origin character from the video game Baldur's Gate 3. A vampire spawn sired by and forced to serve Cazador Szarr, a vampire lord and patriach of the Szarr family, Astarion desperately seeks a way to escape the ties to his sire.

Originally a magistrate working in the city of Baldur's Gate, Astarion was beaten close to death by a group of Gur, a tribe of nomads and monster hunters. As he lay close to death, Astarion was approached by Cazador, who turned him into a vampire spawn. Unable to resist his sire's commands, Astarion, and his fellow spawn were forced to perform Cazador's bidding and were frequently abused, both physically and mentally. As part of a ritual that would enhance his strength, Cazador carved infernal symbols into their back and forced Astarion to seduce innocent victims and bring them to his palace. Although Astarion believed it was so his master could feed on them, in truth, Cazador turned his victims to use them as fuel for the ritual.

While Astarion was seducing a woman in a tavern, a mindlfayer nautiloid appeared overhead and abducted him before implating him with a modified tadpole. After the nautiloid crashed, Astarion joined forces with a group of survivors who were likewise infected with a tadpole. If he was not killed after his vampiric nature was revealed or handed over to the Gur, Astarion remained with the party, learning of the Absolute, an Elder Brain that has been corrupted by the crown of Karsus, and the followers of the gods of death who sought to manipulate it for their own ends, as well as the purposes of the carvings.

If the party confronts Cazador, Astarion either chooses to end the ritual or become its new target, becoming an ascended vampire. After the defeat of the Absolute, Astarion either becomes a vigilante, replaces Cazador as vampire lord, or still lives in fear of his sire.
