To be in the Mafia, you must be one hundred percent Italian, and your bloodlines have to relate straight back to the old country, to Italy, to Sicily, for you to even be a made man.
— Joe Ferrante

The American Mafia, referred to by its members as Cosa Nostra ("our thing") and by the American government as La Cosa Nostra (LCN), is a highly organized Italian-American criminal society and organized crime group. The organization was originally part of the Italian mafia operating from Sicily, but gradually evolved to be its own entity. The Mafia experienced a golden age during the prohibition era, but eventually lost its power, reducing its area of operation to the East Coast.

The Mafia in the United States emerged in impoverished Italian immigrant neighborhoods or ghettos in New York, the Lower East Side, and Brooklyn and other areas of the East Coast of the United States and several other major metropolitan areas during the late 19th century and early 20th century, following waves of Italian immigration especially from Sicily and other regions of Southern Italy. Various Italian-American criminals, eventually merged with Sicilian Mafiosi to create the modern pan-Italian Mafia in North America.

The Mafia is currently most active in the Northeastern United States, Chicago and other Midwestern metropolitan areas. Outside of these areas, the Mafia is also very active in Florida, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. At the Mafia's peak, there were at least 26 cities around the United States with Cosa Nostra families, with many more offshoots and associates in other cities.

Expert's Opinion[]

The experts agreed that, while the Triad had a devastating close and long range weapon, they couldn't overcome the superior firepower of the Tommy Gun or the fact that the Mafia knew the terrain better.

Battle vs. Crips (by TheBlackHistorian)[]

5 Mafia hitmen were outside of a pizza parlor. They were tasked by their padrino to guard this store becaue it was actually a front to their gambling business. Before he can pull the trigger, the Mafiaman tackled him to the street. He then drew his switchblade and tried to jam it at the face of the Crip. But the black man managed to catch his wrist, before headbutting him. He then threw the Mafiaman off of him and made a dash to his gun.

The Italian managed to grab him by his hoodie but it was too late. The Crip now had his pistol in his hands and opened fire several times on the chest of the Mafiaman, killing him. The Crip then yelled in victory.

Expert's Opinion[]

Although experts believed that the Mafia was richer and more influential, they seldom participate in a gunfight and more comfortable in silent assassinations. The Crips, although disorganized, were more experienced and gunhappy when it comes to firefights. In the end, since both were given no preparations and this will be nothing more than a street fight, the Crips' experience in a face-to-face shootouts proved to be the winning factor.
