“ | Those mujahideen are freedom fighters. Those are people fighting for their own country and not wanting to become a satellite state of the Soviet Union, which came in and established a government of its choosing there, without regard to the feelings of the Afghans.

The Afghan mujahideen refers to a loose group of Sunni and Shia Islamist factions that fought against the Soviet forces in the Soviet-Afghan War and the Afghan Civil War.
After the communist coup in 1978, many living in rural areas were heavily against the new regime and felt this even more so due to its repressive nature. This caused many groups to take up arms and fight against the communist government. The Soviet Union, wanting a pro-Soviet Afghanistan, staged a coup and killed the current president, starting the Soviet-Afghan War. The war would last nine years, with the Soviet Union hopeless in stopping the Mujahideen factions. Eventually, in 1987, Mikhail Gorbachev began to withdraw Soviet troops from Afghanistan, which would eventually end the war.
Mujahideen groups, some of them more or less united in the Islamic Unity of Afghanistan Mujahideen, in the years 1989–1992 proclaimed as their conviction that they were battling the hostile "puppet regime" of the Republic of Afghanistan in Kabul. In March 1989, the mujahideen groups Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin and Ittehad-e Islami in cooperation with the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence attacked Jalalabad but they were defeated by June.
In March 1991, a mujahideen coalition quickly conquered the city of Khost. In March 1992, having lost the last remnants of Soviet support, President Mohammad Najibullah agreed to step aside and make way for a mujahideen coalition government. One mujahideen group, Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin, refused to confer and discuss a coalition government under the Pakistani sponsored Peshawar Peace Accords and invaded Kabul. This kicked off a civil war, starting 25 April 1992, between initially three, but within weeks five or six mujahideen groups or armies.

The slightly superior arsenal of the Mujahideen combined with superior endurance and extremism gave them a slight advantage.

Expert's Opinion[]
In an incredibly one-sided display, the Mujahideen take the victory over the Khmer Rouge. While the Cambodian guerillas did have a few weapon advantages, they were relatively minor compared to the similar weapon set of the Mujahideen. The biggest overall factor in this bout was the training, which the Khmer Rouge absolutely snowballed in. The Khmer Rouge were merely made up of teenagers and children scarred and traumatized by war and genocide, whereas the Mujahideen were an effective fighting force that managed to drive the Soviet Union from Afghanistan. It is obvious that the Mujahideen are the more effective guerillas, when compared the inexperienced, poorly trained and generally lacking Khmer Rouge.

Battle vs People's Army of Vietnam(by The Deadliest Warrior)[]
NVA:
Mujahideen:
In an abandoned warehouse complex, a helicopter flies over and drops out four NVA soldiers. Hidden in the bushes lies a Mujahideen Freedom Fighter with a Stinger Missile. He fires the rocket and it blows the helicopter up in mid air, killing the NVA pilot. The NVA retaliate and fire their AKMS's into the bushes, killing the Mujahideen warrior.
The NVA advance into the complex but one of the men steps on a PMN Mine, blowing him sky-high in a shower of dirt. One of the NVA troops stops to place a Bouncing Betty Mine and his companions continue onward.
Two Mujahideen fighters lie in a shadowy doorway and charge out againstthe passing NVA patrol. One of the Vietnamese is bayoneted and another is shot with an AK47 in the head. The lone NVA soldier manages to kill his attackers with two neat shots from his Makarov PM. The Vietnamese soldier takes out his Type 69 RPG and goes back to escape, knowing the mission is too dangerouus. A passing Mujahideen fighter is easy prey for the RPG.
The last Mujahideen warrior advances with his PPS but steps on the Bouncing Betty. It leaps into the air and tears him to shreds. The Vietnamese soldier laughs aloud with relief, but then runs as fast as he can out of the complex in case of another ambush.
WINNER: NVA
Expert's Opinion[]
The NVA were a professional standing force as opposed to the guerrilla fighters of the Mujahideen, and even though the Mujahideen had fought off armies similar to the NVA, in a squad-level fight, the more reliable and professional weapons of the North Vietnamese carried them over their opponents.
