Corporal Adrian Shephard is a character in Valve Software's Half-Life series, being the main protagonist of Half-Life: Opposing Force. A young Marine amid an interdimensional war, Shephard distinguished himself through an extraordinary ability to adapt and survive.
As a corporal at Santego Military Base in Arizona, Shephard caught the attention of the G-Man, a mysterious interdimensional bureaucrat posing as a human. The G-Man used his influence to have Shephard transferred to an advanced training program, after which he was inducted into the Marines' Hazardous Environment Combat Unit, a special forces group created to deal with extraterrestrial incidents, although this purpose was unknown to the Marines.
At the Black Mesa Research Facility, teleportation experiments triggered an invasion from Xen, an alien world. The HECU was deployed to eliminate the invaders along with any Black Mesa personnel to keep the incident secret. However, Shephard's aircraft was shot down before this order could be delivered, leaving him unaware of the HECU's mission. Reviving hours later, Shephard formed an uneasy alliance with Black Mesa's scientists and traversed the facility to evacuate.
To further test Shephard, the G-Man prevented his escape. Shephard encountered the Black Ops, government assassins sent to finish the HECU's task, and Race X, another invading alien race. Shephard killed Race X's leader, ending their invasion. Shephard was extracted by the G-Man from Black Mesa shortly before its destruction. Impressed by Shephard, the G-Man argued for Shephard's preservation against his employers and placed him in extradimensional stasis, leaving his ultimate fate unknown.
