On the Abu Sayyaf, crush them (for the bombings), and for all the atrocities they have committed so far.
— Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana

Abu Sayyaf (Arabic: Jamāʿat Abū Sayyāf, ASG; Filipino: Grupong Abu Sayyaf), officially known by ISIL as the Islamic State – East Asia Province, is a Jihadist militant and pirate group that follows the Wahhabi doctrine of Sunni Islam. It is based in and around Jolo and Basilan islands in the southwestern part (Mindanao) of the Philippines, where for more than four decades, Moro groups have been engaged in an insurgency seeking to make the province independent. The group is considered violent and was responsible for the Philippines' worst terrorist attack, the bombing of Superferry 14 in 2004, which killed 116 people.

Unlike other Moro insurgents, the Abu Sayyaf does not want only independence from the Philippine government, but as a fundamentalist group, they also sought to create a purely Islamic state that would purge Christian and Western influences in Mindanao. Their founder, a theologian teacher by the name of Abdurajik Abubakar Janjalani, fought against the Soviet Union and the Afghan government during the Soviet-Afghan War. During that period, he is alleged to have met Osama bin Laden and been given $6 million to establish a more Islamic group drawn from the MNLF.

The Abu Sayyaf is feared in the Philippines by both Christians and Muslim for their atrocities. In a campaign of genocide, they massacred Christians and Muslims who did not follow their doctrine whenever they went. They kidnapped tourists for ransom, caused large amounts of property damage, and fought the military in a heated religious protracted war. They are considered to be the most dangerous rebel today according to the Philippine Army.
