The 7th Cavalry Regiment is a regiment of the United States Army cavalry that originally formed in 1866. The regiment was among the most utilized and experienced in the infamous American Indian Wars, participating in the Yellowstone and Black Hills Expeditions under the command of George Armstrong Custer. The 7th Cavalry is most famous for its involvement in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer and his men were ambushed by Lakota and Dakota warriors under the command of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, where hundreds regiment members were killed in battle. The regiment saw limited service after their failures during the American Indian Wars, including the Philippine-American War until it was ultimately consolidated into the 1st Cavalry Division in the 1920s.
