The being known as Atrocitus (real name Atros) was born on planet Ryut, and was a survivor of the infamous Massacre of Sector 666, during which the Manhunters wiped out the life in an entire space sector (including his wife and his daughter) except for five lifeforms. These five became the terrorists known as the Five Inversions, led by Atrocitus, and sought revenge against the Guardians of the Universe and gained powers through dark magics. Over time, the demons would build themselves a strong following of worshipers and become known as the Empire of Tears. When the Guardians decided to rid the universe of magic to make way for order, the Empire crumbled and the Five Inversions were imprisoned and crucified on the planet Ysmault to serve out a long sentence for the crimes they had committed. However, the demons were still far from powerless. Through rituals and sacrifices, they discovered a black power so dark it was beyond the power of the Guardians' light.
Much later, Atrocitus was outraged with his associate Qull for revealing the prophecy of the Blackest Night to the Green Lantern Abin Sur. However, Qull's manipulations of the Green Lantern did aid Atrocitus in being released from Ysmault. Abin Sur took him from the planet against orders of the Guardians, traveling to Earth to use Atrocitus to help him find the source of this black power that was prophesied to consume the universe. In transit, Atrocitus exploited the fear these dark prophecies had infected Abin Sur with to free himself from his restraints. He severely wounded Abin Sur and caused them both to crash to Earth's surface, though Atrocitus fell from the ship while it was still airborne.
Battle vs. Frieza (by 123chaseyoung)[]
The gold-clad Frieza floated above a war-torn planet, filled with burning fields, sky-engulfing black smoke, and a large number of rotting smokderint corpses of various alien species. Another good day’s work for this mad conquerer. But soon, his little rest will be challenged.
A red portal opened, and out came a hulking red brute, who expected the carnage that unfolded. “So many…” the alien known as Atrocitus remarked. “Their souls are filled with rage, crying with vengeance.”
Frieza chuckled at this new visitor. “Would you care to join them? Hmmmm?” he asked.
“No, you will be joining them!” yelled Atrocitus. He then jumped into the air, and as he was face-to-face with Frieza, fired a powerful blast of red energy from his ring. Frieza easily dodged the attack, before sending a powerful death beam that incenerated and sliced off Atrocitus’s left arm.
As his enemy grunted in pain, Frieza taunted, “Some of the kids I killed here put up a better fight than you.”
“Don’t get too cocky,” replied Atrocitus. The red lantern then summoned a constructs in the shaoe of swords, axes, and maces, before charging at Frieza. The golden alien managed to evade the first sword slices, but was quickly tagged by axes that cut his back, and maces that cracked his armor. Fighting back, Frieza punched and kicked the constructs into pieces, leaving Atrocitus open. He dashed towards the red lanter and smashes a cross right at his jaw, but Atroctius quickly counters with a kick to Frieza’s ribs.
Frieza then flew out of there and summoned ki blasts in quick succession. With his arm now healer, Atrocitus blocked most of the barrage. Frieza then followed it up by trapping Atrocitus in a large cage made of energy lasers, before summoning both a powerful ball of energy and a powerful disk of energy, which he threw at Atrocitus. The red lantern managed to create a force field to defend himself.
Undeterred, the golden conquerer poured everything unti Atrocitus, from ki explosions, energy balls and discs, and bombs. Atrocitus made sure to use all the rage in him and around him to keep his force field intact. But he knew the end would be near if he couldn’t find a way to break this stalemate. He finally decided to use blood magic by taking drops of blood from his bleeding head and smearing it unto his palms. Soon, the answer finally came to him.
Atrocitus then trapped Frieza in a sphere construct. Before Frieza could break out of it with his fists, Atrocitus teleported them away into another dimension that was filled with nothing but pitch darkness and unexistence.
“W-What is this?” Frieza asked.
“This is the Land of the Unliving, Nekron’s turf,” replied Atrocitus. “It’s a dimension between life and death, between heaven and hell. Nothing exists here except for the dead and the lanterns. Again, nothing exists here, not even your powers.”
Frieza shook as Atrocitus said this, for he felt that his ki had totally disappeared from his body. He couldn’t do anything anymore. His golden form was also gone. He had essentially become… powerless…
“W-What are you????!!!” Frieza demanded.
But Atrocitus did not answer. He just took the now harmless Frieza in the neck. As the alien squirmed, gasped, and pleaded, Atrocitus said, “With blood and rage of crimson red, Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead, Together with our hellish hate, We'll burn you all, that is your fate!”
Atrocitus then locked mouths with Frieza, and vomitted all the corrosive plasma from inside of him. In tears, Frieza felt his molecules burning and disentegrating. Soon, nothing remained of him. The red lantern then teleported away, contented with his achievements.
Expert’s Opinion[]
Experts believed that Atrocitus won because, while both are powerful, as well as being armed with powers and abilities that they can shape and weaponize, the red lantern proved to be far more physically powerful and smarter of the two.

Battle vs. Emperor Palpatine (Legends) (by JWarrior89)[]
On board the second Death Star, Palpatine sits in his throne room. Suddenly, he hears the door slide open behind him; he rotates his throne around to see Atrocitus storming toward him, dragging the corpse of one of his Elite Guards by his neck. Atrocitus throws the corpse at Palpatine's feet. "Palpatine!" Atrocitus roars.
"Master Atrocitus," Palpatine responds, "You are stronger than I expected. I thought my forces would have granted you more of a challenge."
"I am fueled by rage itself!" Atrocitus growls, "You are a fool for thinking your pathetic guards could hinder me, and you shall pay for that foolishness with your life!"
"Are you threatening me, Atrocitus?" Palpatine asks, cooly.
"When I'm done with you," Atrocitus roars, "I will rip you in half and feast on your flesh!"
Palpatine gets up from his throne.
"So be it..." he says. He raises his hands and casts Force Lightning, but Atrocitus flies upward to avoid it. Palpatine continues to cast lightning, but Atrocitus manages to dodge it, then flies forward, slamming into Palpatine. He pins Palpatine against the wall and proceeds to viciously beat him. He then turns and throws Palpatine across the room.
Palpatine crashes to the floor, but quickly gets to his feet, drawing and igniting his lightsaber. Atrocitus fires several energy blasts from his power ring, but Palpatine blocks them all. He then reaches out with the Force, pulling loose part of an upper platform and hurls it at Atrocitus, who doesn't get out of the way in time and is sent crashing to the floor.
Palpatine grins at the sight of Atrocitus pinned under the platform, but his grin quickly vanishes as Atrocitus manages to push it off and get to his feet. Growling, he forms an energy blade from his red power ring and charges Palpatine. He swings his blade, but Palpatine manages to block it with his lightsaber. The two engage in a vicious sword battle.
For a while, the two are evenly matched, but then Palpatine enhances his movements with Force Speed, unleashing a flurry of blows that force Atrocitus back. Suddenly, Palpatine uses the Force to blast him against the wall, then leaps at him using Force Flight. He swings his lightsaber, but Atrocitus rolls out of the way, behind Palpatine.
Atrocitus lunges at Palpatine with his energy blade, but Palpatine quickly blasts him with Force Lightning, stopping him dead in his tracks. Atrocitus roars in pain as the lightning courses through him. Palpatine continues to cast lightning, forcing him to his knees. He then stops, and slowly approaches Atrocitus.
"Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design." he says, "Your pathetic Red Lantern Corps are heading into a trap. They will be put down like the mindless animals they are."
Atrocitus growls in fury.
"And now, Atrocitus..." Palpatine says, softly, "you will die..."
Atrocitus roars and stabs at Palpatine, but in one swift motion, Palpatine cuts off his hand with his lightsaber. Atrocitus cries out in pain as his hand, red power ring still on the finger, falls to the floor. Without the ring to circulate his blood, Atrocitus crumples to the floor and slowly dies. Palpatine deactivates his lightsaber and cackles in victory.
Winner: Palpatine.
